NAMAH 1.0
National Assistance in Mental Health for Health Providers and Administrators
A Journey to Enhance Happiness and Cultivate Resilience
March - June 2023
Why NAMAH?
Stress and burnout among medical students, doctors and other healthcare professionals is on the rise.
Burnout is a stress-induced syndrome defined by three distinct manifestations: emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and diminished sense of personal accomplishment.
The Reality of Physician Burnout
- Loss of autonomy, increasing demands on time and energy
- Insurance/documentation hassles and the "electronization" of medicine
- Intrusion into the sacred bond between doctor and patient
- Over 50% of physicians in India report burnout (both personal and professional)
- COVID-19 has further increased burnout - doctors were 1.64 times more likely to experience pandemic-related burnout
"Burned out physicians provide inferior care, have fewer compliant patients and are named in more malpractice suits. In essence, we cannot give what we do not have."
What to Do? The Power of Happiness
Need to Ask: How Happy Am I?
Happiness matters to physicians as to any human being. Happiness breeds success. Success does not necessarily produce happiness.
Happy Doctors Provide Superior Care
- More satisfied patients
- Named in fewer malpractice suits
- Increased patient compliance
- Better overall quality of care
This professional development program titled NAMAH (National Assistance in Mental Health for Health Providers and Administrators) is a journey for each of us to enhance happiness and cultivate resilience.
