Program Overview

Motivational Interviewing (MI) 3.0 represents the latest evolution in evidence-based communication techniques for healthcare professionals working with individuals with substance use disorders. This comprehensive program builds on decades of research and clinical practice to provide cutting-edge skills in patient-centered care and behavioral change facilitation.

This advanced course integrates the core principles of motivational interviewing with contemporary understanding of addiction science, neurobiology of change, and trauma-informed care. Participants will develop sophisticated skills in eliciting intrinsic motivation, resolving ambivalence, and supporting sustainable recovery through collaborative therapeutic relationships.

Learning Objectives
  • Master the foundational principles of Motivational Interviewing and the PACE spirit (Partnership, Acceptance, Compassion, Evocation)
  • Develop proficiency in OARS techniques (Open questions, Affirmations, Reflective listening, Summarizing) with advanced applications
  • Navigate the four processes of MI: Engaging, Focusing, Evoking, and Planning with confidence and skill
  • Recognize and elicit change talk using DARN-CAT framework (Desire, Ability, Reason, Need - Commitment, Activation, Taking steps)
  • Effectively address sustain talk and resistance without confrontation or argumentation
  • Apply MI principles across different stages of change and various substance use presentations
  • Integrate trauma-informed care principles within MI framework for complex presentations
  • Develop skills in group MI applications and family-involved interventions
  • Create personalized change plans that honor client autonomy and values
  • Demonstrate competency through role-plays and real case presentations with peer feedback
Program Details

Duration & Format

12-week comprehensive program with weekly 2.5-hour sessions conducted every Thursday from 2:30 PM to 5:00 PM. The course combines 20 hours of live interactive sessions with 10 hours of self-paced e-learning modules, totaling 30 contact hours.

Target Participants

Healthcare professionals including doctors (MBBS, MDs), nurses (B.Sc Nursing, GNM), psychologists (MA/MSc Psychology), social workers (MSW or above), and counselors who are actively working with individuals presenting with substance use disorders.

Delivery Method

Hybrid learning approach utilizing Zoom for live sessions, iECHO.org platform for case consultations, elearn.vknnimhans.in for digital resources, and Slido.com for interactive engagement during sessions.

Registration Status

Registration is now CLOSED. This program was offered FREE exclusively to healthcare professionals employed under the Odisha Government. All 40 participant slots have been filled due to overwhelming response.

Certification Requirements

To earn certification: maintain 75% attendance (9/12 sessions), complete one comprehensive case presentation, achieve >75% score on three e-assignments, complete pre/post assessments, and submit monthly patient progress reports.

Access to state-of-the-art learning platforms including Zoom telehealth, NIMHANS eLearning portal, HIPAA-compliant JotForm for case documentation, and mobile applications for on-the-go learning and reference materials.
