Centre for Addiction Medicine, NIMHANS | June - September 2024
Impact of CCAUD 15
The Problem
Alcohol Use Disorder is a major public health crisis in India. Nearly 15% of the population aged between 10 and 75 years consume alcohol, which translates to approximately 16 crore people. Among these:
Only one in thirty-eight individuals with alcohol dependence ever receives treatment. The National Mental Health Survey of India found the treatment gap to be 86.3% for alcohol use disorders.
About NIMHANS ECHO: Democratizing Knowledge
NIMHANS ECHO is an innovative capacity building program that uses a HUB and SPOKE knowledge-sharing network, led by expert teams from the National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences (NIMHANS) in Bangalore, to provide training and tele-mentoring to healthcare professionals working in remote and rural areas of India.
The Hub and Spoke Model
The model links an interprofessional specialist team at NIMHANS academic centre of expertise (the Hub) with healthcare providers (spokes). Each NIMHANS tele-ECHO session consists of:
- Spoke-led presentations of anonymized patient cases
- Discussion of cases with peer and hub expert advice on diagnosis and management
- Brief didactic sessions on mental health-related topics
Using smartphone apps and multipoint videoconferencing, healthcare professionals access live virtual sessions weekly, learning through case-based learning, best practices, and web-based monitoring for outcomes.
