Addressing a Critical Healthcare Challenge
In Odisha: Around 30% of adult men and 4.3% of women consume alcohol, with over 2.1 million people requiring medical intervention for alcohol use disorders. Among Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Groups (PVTGs), alcohol use prevalence exceeds 60%.
National Scenario: Only 1 in 38 individuals with alcohol dependence receives treatment, with an 86.3% treatment gap for alcohol use disorders.

Course Objectives
- → Differentiate various factors leading to Alcohol Use Disorders by integrating hereditary, neurobiological and psycho-social factors
- → Incorporate screening and assessment for Alcohol use disorder in practice
- → Increase ability to decide safe and appropriate pharmacological agents and psychosocial interventions
- → Decide when to refer patients to specialized care
Curriculum Modules
Module I: Understanding Alcohol Use Disorders
+Learning Objectives:
- Explain multi-factorial causes of AUD (biological, psychological, social)
- Recognize signs and symptoms of alcohol-related problems
- Understand psychological and physical health comorbidities
- Initiate non-judgmental, empathetic conversations with patients
Key Sessions:
- Assessment I: Engagement and compassion for patients with AUD
- Assessment II: Evaluating psychological and medical comorbidities
- Neurobiology of Alcohol Use Disorder
Module II: Diagnosis and Assessment
+Learning Objectives:
- Accurately diagnose AUD using standardized classification systems
- Utilize validated tools like AUDIT for screening
- Differentiate between simple and complex alcohol withdrawal
- Apply appropriate treatment protocols
Key Sessions:
- Terminology and diagnosis (DSM-5/ICD-11)
- Screening using AUDIT
- Alcohol Withdrawal Syndrome management
- Complex withdrawal (Seizure and DT) management
Module III: Long-term Management
+Learning Objectives:
- Implement patient-centered pharmacological strategies
- Apply brief intervention and motivational interviewing skills
- Recognize early signs of relapse and provide prevention strategies
- Decide when to refer patients to specialized care

- Choosing and prescribing anticraving agents
- Brief intervention in busy medical practice
- Enhancing motivation to change
- Prevention of relapse
Accreditation Requirements
All requirements must be fulfilled for certification as per NIMHANS Digital Academy Board of Studies
Attendance
More than 75% attendance (9/12 live sessions) with >60 minutes video presence per session
Case Presentation
Present one case of Alcohol Use disorder during weekly live tele-ECHO sessions
Assignments
Complete three e-assignments with >75% score each. Second attempt available if needed.
Patient Reports
Submit monthly reports of patients seen/evaluated during and 6 months after the course
Tests
Complete pre-test and post-test (no scoring involved)

During weekly VKN NIMHANS ECHO tele-ECHO clinics, participants present patient cases using developed case record forms (CRF). Following case presentation and peer discussion with NIMHANS HUB team, there will be brief didactic topics presented by subject academic experts.
Each participant will have access to our learning management system at elearn.vknnimhans.in or through the NIMHANS elearn app. Self-study materials include selected textbooks, articles, videos, presentations, and proctored assignments.
