NIMHANS Digital Academy VKN ECHO: Democratizing Knowledge

NIMHANS Digital Academy Virtual Knowledge Network (VKN) + Project ECHO model works on the principle of HUB and SPOKES, a knowledge-sharing network led by an expert multidisciplinary team at NIMHANS.

How It Works

This model utilizes fortnightly multipoint video conferencing to conduct virtual tele-ECHO clinics with community healthcare providers. The focus of these tele-ECHO clinics is on:

  • Case-based learning to disseminate best practices
  • Algorithms, guidelines and clinical wisdom for knowledge diffusion
  • Technology to leverage scarce resources
  • Web-based monitoring to measure learning outcomes

This "guided practice" of case management strengthens the confidence and enhances the skills of healthcare professionals in the community. Patients also get the best treatment in their own community without travelling to distant places.

About ODAMH

Odisha Digital Academy for Mental Health (ODAMH) has been functioning at Mental Health Institute (COE), S.C.B Medical College & Hospital, Cuttack since 2019. ODAMH was started with the support of Govt. of Odisha in collaboration with NIMHANS Digital Academy VKN ECHO, Bangalore.

Our Vision

To develop a network of highly skilled Human Resource in Mental Health for the state of Odisha through case-based learning, knowledge sharing and hand-holding by an expert multidisciplinary team at MHI, SCBMCH Cuttack. This network will touch lives of rural and underserved population across Odisha and make evidence-based treatment available and accessible to all.

Program Impact: DMHP psychologists and Psychiatric Social Workers from Odisha joined the Tuesday afternoon tele-NIMHANS ECHO using their smartphones. They discussed cases and interacted with NIMHANS experts for didactics, bringing world-class knowledge to rural Odisha.
